Sony has just announced that it will be releasing a new Camera model in the XDCAM EX series. This camera is unlike any XDCAM EX camera it is a completely different beast, it takes a PL mount so that you can use 35mm film lenses and has a full frame Sony’s Exmor™ Super35 CMOS sensor . I love Sony’s XDCAM format, very reliable (field tested- used by Al-Watan TV) , very efficient and very post friendly. If XDCAM compression is not enough for you, try the optional Dual Link HD-SDI option that will enable 10bit RGB uncompressed signal output to be connected to an SRW-1 Recorder to HDCAM-SR. Finally! now this is what I would call a decent RED competitor, not yet the 4K resolution PMW-F3 only records at 1920×1080 which is more than enough for what you want it to do.
The F3 is scheduled to ship in February 2011 at $16,000 for the body only or at $23,000 for a kit that includes three Sony-branded T2.0 PL-mount prime lenses at 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm.
