News: Steven Spielberg’s Upcoming Films

Disney has scheduled release dates for two of Speilberg’s planned new movies. An untitled Cold War thriller due in 2015 and Roald Dahl’s adaptation The BFG set for 2016.

Tom Hanks is officially attached to the first film, which was originally scripted by Matt Charman but is currently undergoing a re-write by no lesser filmmakers than the Coen brothers. Based on a true story, it’ll find Hanks as James Donovan, a lawyer thrust into the frozen heart of the Cold War when the CIA dispatches him to Russia to negotiate for the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. That film is set to hit the US on October 16, 2015.

Spielberg will likely be working concurrently to prepare for his other current confirmed outing, a new live-action take on The BFG, which will see a young girl befriending a benevolent giant who pipes sweet dreams into sleeping children’s heads and stops his less-pleasant kinsman from scooping the ankle-biters up and eating them. E.T.’s Melissa Mathison wrote the script for that one, which has yet to announce any casting. American audiences can expect it on July 1, 2016. Whether the releases go day-and-date for the rest of the world remains to be seen, but at least it’s a more confident sign that new Spielberg films are on their way.
